We take a look back at our time as the Barclaycard Arena!

On Friday 1st September, the Barclaycard Arena will be known as Arena Birmingham…a move which reflects the venue's fantastic location! Join us as we take a look back at some of the best moments during our time as Barclaycard Arena!

Over the past few years, we’ve had so many great memories which we’ll cherish forever, not only as a venue, but as a city!

Bublé opens the show!

On 2nd December 2014, iconic crooner Michael Bublé, arrived here in Birmingham to officially open the Barclaycard Arena for the very first time. And what a show he put on. With a set-list featuring classic covers including You Make Me Feel So Young (Frank Sinatra) and All You Need Is Love (The Beatles) as well as an array of his original hits, Bublé opened the arena in style!

Game, set, match, Great Britain!

In March 2016, we were chosen to host Great Britain’s first-round Davis Cup tie against Japan, bringing the likes of Kei Nishikori, Leon Smith and arguably GB’s greatest ever player, Andy Murray to Birmingham.

Davis Cup

Held across 3-days, the event brought tennis fans from all over the world to our venue, well and truly sticking us on the map in the process. The match to decide things was also potentially one of the greatest Davis Cup matches ever played, as Murray and Nishikori treated us to a huge 5-hour marathon as the Brit finally triumphed 7-5, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3!

We gon’ party like it’s our birthday!

We celebrated our 1st birthday as the Barclaycard Arena with techno giants, Faithless and what a bash it was! We’re talking loads of cake, loads of prizes and of course, loads of balloons! You lot scoffed over 500 cupcakes whilst giving large to Insomnia…tell me a better way to spend your birthday?

Return of the Gladiators!

In August 2015, stars from everyone’s favourite Saturday night game show returned to Birmingham as the Gladiators dropped by the arena for the first time in over 15-years! The guys rolled back the years as part of filming for a reunion programme, which had fans begging for another Gladiators rebirth...who knows what the future will bring.

Home of record breakers!

We’ve been breaking records left, right and centre during our time as the Barclaycard Arena. From Mo Farah smashing the indoor 2-mile world record during the Sainsbury's Indoor Grand Prix in 2015 to Celine Dion becoming the highest grossing performer at our venue in 2017. Pretty impressive few years wouldn't you agree!

All of the acts!

The list of A-List artists that have played our venue during our time as the Barclaycard Arena is absolutely ridiculous! Over the past few years we've hosted the likes of One Direction, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Queen, Drake, Justin Bieber, Morrissey, The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran right here in Birmingham - we're gonna have loads more coming soon too so keep a look out!

Chester Bennington’s final performance

Chester Resize

It’s with a heavy-heart that we write this and something we wish we didn't have to, but on the 6th July 2017, Linkin Park played their final show with Chester Bennington before his tragic, untimely death. Chester sadly passed a few just a few weeks after his Birmingham show, which sparked global mourning across the music world. Within a few days of the shocking news, fans paid tribute to Chester by placing flowers, notes and memories right outside our arena, a moment which truly touched our hearts.

Although gone, his voice, presence and influence will live on forever.

What's next?

Well, we've had a fantastic ride as the Barclaycard Arena and we're looking forward to many more memories as we change to a name which reflects our position in the heart of the city, so, as of THIS Friday, say hello to...Arena Birmingham!
