How The 1975 Got Their Name...

You’ll know Matthew Healy, Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann and George Daniel as The 1975, but up until 2012 the band trialled a range of different names before settling on The 1975...

The band toyed with a whole host of potential band names including Me and You Versus Them, Forever Enjoying Sex, Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep and Drive Like I Do...

But why did they chose The 1975?

Well, there are loads of theories as to why the lads chose the name we know and love in this present day, but lead singer Matty finally confirmed the reason in 2013 in an interview with US website, Independent Philly.

“Independent Philly: Who came up with the name ‘The 1975’?”

Matty Healy: I came up with that when I was about 19. I met this guy when I was on holiday, this artist, and he gave me some books. When I got home and went through them, one of the books he had given me was like a diary and the previous owner had dated it “1st of June, the 1975″. It was an interesting use of language, I’m just not sure why they used the word “the”. It just kind of stuck with me and then when we came to looking for a proper name it just seemed kind of perfect.

So it’s as simple as that. Matty liked what he saw on an old book and there we have it, The 1975 was born. Whilst we’re on the theme of 1975, we’ve put together a list of things that happened way back in this interesting year…

  • The British Conservative Party chooses its first women leader, Margaret Thatcher.
  • New York City avoids bankruptcy when President Gerald R. Ford signed a $2.3 billion loan.
  • Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody spent 9 weeks at the number 1 spot.
