A quick look at 2k19

JANUARY TO JULY

We love January here in Birmingham, why I hear you scream, well, because January is usually the month we welcome Strictly Come Dancing Live to our arena and 2018 was no different (nor is 2019 btw). The 2018 tour was magical, bringing all the sequins, glitter and pizazz to the city! We also welcomed Hollywood superstar Chris Rock to Brum as well as of the most prestigious Basketball finals as the Cheshire Phoenix were crowned the 2018 BBL Cup champs! Oh, and little-known artist called Lady Gaga donned us with her presence to wrap off the perfect start to 2018!

Then the sport took over…

It was then time for us to swap our microphones and dance routines for trainers and pole vaults as we got super sporty in Birmingham. In March 2018, we were buzzing to host the IAAF World Indoor Championships which brought the best of the athletics world to the city for a weekend of historic, unforgettable sport – who remembers Pozzi bringing home the gold?!

The sport kept coming as we removed the track and replaced it with three pristine courts as the YONEX All England Badminton Championships moved in for the week. It’s been an honour to host such as fantastic, global event over the last few decades and we’re so happy to announce that it’ll be returning in 2019 too! We wasn’t fibbing when we said that sport completely took over our arena during the start of the year as once the badminton had concluded, we then turned our attention to another world event as the Gymnastics World Cup arrived on 21st March.

We ended the month with a good ol’ gig as Fall Out Boy boxed off March and we moved swiftly into April. The next few weeks brought the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars, Harbhajan Mann, Dancing On Ice Live, Fast & Furious Live, Manic Street Preachers and Ben Portsmouth which made April a pretty decent month!

There was noway we were going to slow things down in May, June and July as Noel Gallagher kicked things off in style. From that point we hosted SO many events including Premier League Darts, Michael McIntyre, Diljit Dosanjh, ESL One, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and the simply amazing Walking With Dinosaurs!

AUGUST TO DECEMBER

Some people see the summer as the time to kick back and relax with an ice cold bevvy in hand – not us – we just kept churning out event after event giving you guys somewhere to head to after a day topping up the tan in the garden.

Throughout August to September we gave you guys family shows, global superstar comedians and legendary pop stars in the shape of Paw Patrol LIVE, Kevin Hart and the one and only Justin Timberlake.

September packed a punch as Amir Khan completed his 2018 comeback with a comprehensive win over Sammy Vargas. After wiping up the blood, sweat and beers from this big night of boxing, we rolled out the red carpet for the return of Indie royalty as Alex Turner’s Arctic Monkeys gave us a couple nights of pure perfection! We then squeezed in five more events before moving into October as Shania Twain, 50 Cent, Babbu Maan, Jason Derulo and Chris Tucker all delivered 5 star performances!

We need to take a deep breath for this *inhales* here’s just a flavour of what we gave you lot in October and November…ready?...here we go…Cirque du Soleil OVO, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Disney On Ice, Slayer, Bring Me The Horizon, Prodigy, Culture Club, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, Nitro Circus, Birmingham International Tattoo, Ms Lauryn Hill and Pete Tong to name a few!

And in a blink of an eye, it was December. Christmas (as always) crept upon us and before we knew it tinsel was floating around the office and you couldn’t move without hearing a Christmas song – but we loved it, obviously. Away from all the mince pies we were scoffing, we also put on eleven huge events, with Human League, Star Wars Live, Lea Michele & Darren Criss, Nightwish, Black Stone Cherry, Andre Rieu, Madness, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Def Leppard and UB40 all stopping by!
